2011 Council of the District of Columbia
Created by Mayor Fenty in 2006, the Washington Area Metropolitan Police Department (WMPD) is headquartered in Washington, D.C. .
These officers are on foot and are assigned to areas such as the White House, Capitol Hill, Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Penn Quarter, Chinatown, and along the main streets of Northwest and Northeast D.C. .
Officers assigned to these districts are assigned a geographic area such as District 1, Division 1, and are responsible for patrolling all of the city's neighborhoods and can be called on for general inquiries or emergencies.
Also included in the WMPD is the Drug Enforcement Administration's Regional Enforcement Support Center, the Metropolitan Police Department's Vice and Intelligence Division, the Police Department's Fugitive Apprehension Division, and the Air Support Unit. .
Other municipal police forces also provide policing for the District of Columbia, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Police (WMATA) Police Department.
District of Columbia Homeland Security Advisory Council
The District of Columbia Homeland Security Advisory Council (DCHSAC) is a separate government body established by the United States Congress under the District of Columbia Homeland Security Act of 2002. DCHSAC is comprised of about a dozen federal, state and local government agencies and works to coordinate with the Department of Homeland Security to protect the District of Columbia from threats to its infrastructure and to increase the city's resilience to disasters.
